Navy Musicians Association


The O.C. McMillan Scholarship Award is a cash award intended to give financial assistance to a young musician who is enrolled in or has been accepted for enrollment in a college-level degree program in music.


An applicant must be a performer of a musical instrument or singer who is

  • under the age of 26 as of April 1 of the year of application,
  • a college student enrolled in a college-level degree program in music, or a high school senior (or student of equivalent academic status under private instruction in a musical instrument or voice) who has been accepted for enrollment in a college-level degree program in music, and
  • sponsored by an NMA member in good standing.


Applications must be received by the Scholarship Committee by April 1st of the year of application. Applications must include: 

  • a completed application form, which may be furnished by request to the Scholarship Fund Coordinator or may be downloaded here.
  •  a letter of introduction from an NMA member in good standing.
  •  a letter of reference from someone who can verify the applicant’s ability.
  •  a CD or audio cassette recording of the applicant performing a work, with or without accompaniment, from the solo repertoire list of the music educators’ association of the applicant’s state of residence. The solo must be

                  - no longer than ten minutes in length, and
                  - accompanied by a clean reproduced copy of the solo.

Exceptions to criteria must be approved by the Scholarship Fund Coordinator


Judging will be done blindly; adjudicators will not know the identity of applicants. Judges will score applicants using the Navy Musicians Association Adjudication Sheet, which may be downloaded here.
